COMPANY WENT FOR WORLD TOUR TO LOOK FOR MARBLE AND GRANITE

November, 06

Dave Wohletz, a shop foreman for Sarto Marble & Granite, smoothes out a seam on a granite countertop at the shop in St. Marys. Hiding the seam lying between two slabs of granite is the most difficult part of the company's manufacturing process.

The owners of a St. Marys business have been traveling for the searching of the best granite and marble for countertops globally.

Sarto Marble & Granite, of St. Marys, buys granite from India and Brazil and marble from Italy. Examples of their work can be found in countertops at Total Home Concepts, 1131 S.W. Winding Road, Topeka.

Employees of Sarto Marble & Granite have been to workshops to master the craft of building countertops with granite and marble and have learned the trickiest part -- hiding the seam between two slabs of granite.

"These guys are very impressive, they do a good job. Their seam work is outstanding," said Danny Smart, a longtime builder and owner of D.W. Smart Construction, which does mostly upscale remodeling and whole-house renovations.

"We are turning out superior-quality product right now and our customers are telling us that," said Ken Moats, part owner of the business.

Sarto Marble & Granite is one of three businesses operating in the K.G. Moats & Sons building on the west side of St. Marys.

"I needed a job, so I launched my own business," Moats said. "Necessity is the mother of invention."

K.G. Moats & Sons builds control panels, process controls and systems integration for all kinds of businesses.

"What's driven our success is we have been fortunate to hire smart managers and dedicated employees," Moats said.
